As the name suggests, the First Information Report (FIR) is the first record of a crime. It is a legal document prepared by the Department of Police which consists of the name and address of the person filing the report, type of crime committed, the time, date and place where the incident happened and details about what happened during the assault. Lying on the document is strictly prohibited and anyone lying on the report will be punished according to the Pakistan Penal Code.
The Police can only start investigating a crime after an FIR is registered.
Authorities must be informed about crimes – acid attacks, domestic violence, murder, theft, rape etc – so they can take certain measures according to the law. For the State’s law and order to improve, local authorities should make sure that criminals are dealt with properly and citizens should also begin to understand the objective behind registering an FIR.
