Media is considered one of the four pillars of the country. Although the foundation of media is based on becoming the voice of the common man, a lot of times what happens is that media agencies work under a lot of pressure. Media houses are businesses as well and need revenues to survive, which are mostly based on the revenues generated by government advertising. This takes away the independence of several media platforms and their role becomes more political rather than being entrenched in the principles of human development. Media is a strong tool for building pressure on a government and in a democratic society, it is necessary to find means to voice the concerns of the population. The strength of democracy lies in civic engagement and media independence – two factors that people should stand up for.
