The Federal Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari has approved the extension of paternity leave for a period of 10 days. This means that those fathers working in the government can now avail 10 paid days off from work after the birth of their child.

The idea of paternity leave is new in Pakistan.

This is because roles in the society have been segregated. Men go to work and women take care of the children. Don’t worry, there is nothing wrong with that. (unless someone is forced to do so).

However, the corporate world is eventually catching up with people. Not only men but women are also actively seeking jobs. In this scenario, it would mean that both parents are working.

The concept of a paternity or maternity leave is to allow a parent significant bonding time with their child without having to worry about job security.

For the longest time, such a leave in Pakistan was limited to working mothers. Our legislation offers a period of three months as maternity leave. But with this new amendment, working fathers can also bond with their children.

According to a branch of science called epigenetics, the most important stage for brain development is the beginning of life, starting in the womb and then the first year of life. It is important for both, mothers and fathers, to interact with their child at this point because this interaction will determine how they fare in life when they grow up.

Mothers are the primary caregivers in Pakistan.

With the implementation of such policies, at least in the government sector, these roles will become more inclusive. 10 days off from work will automatically guarantee more time at home. The concern should be that men avail this opportunity. For this purpose, the government needs to start awareness campaigns within their own set up. If change is brought within the ranks, its overall implementation and acceptance becomes easier.

Private sector is a tricky area where paternal or maternal leave is not often guaranteed.

The government must also mobilize the private sector to be mindful of these developments and cater to the social life of their employees.
