Get Your Placards Ready, Aurat March Is Back Again

Aurat March – two words which definitely created a jolt in the online community of Pakistan. Women last year joined efforts to march in the cities of Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi.

After several years, women witnessed a movement for themselves as a result of a binding sisterhood.

While much of the focus last year was around the quirky placards the ladies carried, but there was more to the Aurat March than just that.

It was more about the united front the women presented. It did not matter who you were and what you did. You did not even have to agree with all the ideas put forth but you were welcomed into the movement as long as you believed in the empowerment of women and breaking the shackles of patriarchy.

Post the Zia regime, the narrative of women has been aggressively sidelined.

We have witnessed this in the form of the absence of feminist politics in Pakistan. The March last year was able to remind women that they are not alone in this fight and instead of fighting alone, they can now join forces. This new development will encourage several women and men to align themselves with the feminist movement rather than pushing for a change in isolation. This is a huge victory for the movement itself because it was all that anyone could discuss on social media. It is reflective of the fact that times have changed and the reach of social media is enabling feminist politics to take root once again.

This year again, women have worked day and night to make the movement a success

In order to ensure that no group feels left out or feels that important issues are ignored, both a manifesto along with a media campaign was launched to invite each individual who believes in the empowerment of people.

On March 8, women will march once again for themselves and for every individual caged by patriarchy.

It will be a great feat of feminist politics, of the intellect of women, of the capability for sisterhood and of the future which will encompass all narratives. See you all there!
